Lewes Racecourse Club

Nearly five decades have passed since the last-ever horse race was held in the spectacular South Downs setting of Lewes Racecourse. When jockey Bobby Elliott galloped past the finishing post in first place on 7/1 shot Miss Rhondda at a couple of minutes past 4.30pm on Monday 14th September 1964, a fascinating racing tradition spanning two and a half centuries came to an abrupt end. Those crowds will never return.

Now a group of enthusiasts, led by Lewes horse racing historian Barry Foulkes, are determined to ensure that the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the course’s closure in 2014 is appropriately marked.

It is wonderful too that there are working stables still in operation on the Race Hill. From the vantage of public footpaths on any morning one can see racehorses out on the gallops, being put through their paces and clearly enjoying the exercise and bracing breezes perpetually playing along the verdant green saddles of the South Downs. Much of the original racecourse fencing remains and it’s really not hard to imagine back 50 years to a time when thoroughbreds and Tote and jellied eels and much banter from the bookies were what drew so many thousands to Lewes race meetings hoping that this was their lucky day.

What are timeless are the epic views southwards across the town of Lewes to the rolling South Downs with Mount Caburn, Firle Beacon, Seaford Head and the sparkling waters of the English Channel all present in one glorious sweep of the eye.

Timeless too are the paintings, photographs and film footage of Lewes and the Lewes Race Hill left to posterity. We want to share them all with you as we REMEMBER LEWES RACECOURSE.
